Rochester, N.Y. — A big turnout for an evening that was dedicated to celebrating the contributions of African Americans in the Rochester community.
The Black Heritage Youth Gala was held Monday night.
The celebration not only consisted of a variety of performances.
Each attendee was tasked with researching an inventor of their choice to share at the gala and a cultural dish that paired well with that with that inventor for everyone to sample.
Organizers say it’s a chance for all community members to learn.
“So many times now, a lot of Black History is overlooked or not talked about,” said Carmen Jones, the community center manager for the city of Rochester. “Within our R-Center, we provide that outlet for our participants to come to do their own research, ask questions and learn, and also ask questions about the community they’re in that holds a lot of history as well.”
The city of Rochester will host its Black Heritage Gala Saturday night.
