While “Avengers: Infinity War” had been threatening to give “Black Panther,” a run for its money, the latest Marvel release still owes the all-Black superhero film some credit for its success.
“To call ‘Black Panther’ the best lead-in ever would be the understatement of the year, with that film essentially supercharging the enthusiasm for ‘Infinity War’ that added countless dollars to the bottom line,” comScore box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian told The Hollywood Reporter Monday, April 30.
“Infinity War” secured the biggest opening weekend in history following its Friday, April 27 release by earning $630 million domestically and globally. Still, “Black Panther” remains the biggest superhero movie of all time and audiences are still racing to theaters to see it, as the film is still being shown alongside “Infinity War.”
As fans went to see the newest Marvel Comic Universe release, they also took in “Black Panther,” making the latter move from the no. 8 spot at the box office to no. 5 — and the film has been out for nearly 11 weeks.
Another advantage is the “Black Panther” characters being featured in “Infinity War.” Boseman’s titular superhero, along with Letitia Wright’s Shuri, Danai Gurira’s Okoye and Winston Duke’s M’Baku all appear in the latest Avengers flick.
So even with all the excitement surrounding “Infinity War,” folks are still backing “Black Panther,” as evidenced by the following tweets.
“Black Panther > Avengers Infinity #Wakandaforever.”
“Black Panther was far better than Avengers Infinity War, in my opinion.”
“Avengers ain’t better movie than Black Panther, just more people getting punched up. Don’t believe the hype.”
