A family in India was shocked to discover that their newborn son was still alive while they were on the way to his funeral.
On Thursday, a New Delhi mother gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl. The girl was declared to be stillborn, while the boy was in critical condition until he, too, was declared dead, according to CNN.
But when they were driving to the cremation ground, the family noticed one of the bags moving and found the little boy still alive.
“When we opened the bag, we found the boy breathing. I was shocked. I couldn’t believe my eyes,” Praveen Malik, the twin’s grandfather, told CNN.
According to Malik, the family took the baby to Delhi New Born Centre for treatment. It’s not clear if he will ultimately survive, but the family did not want to return to the Max Super Specialty Hospital.
“We don’t want to keep our baby at Max hospital. We don’t trust the doctors there,” Malik said. “They betrayed us.”
The hospital released a statement saying that they gave the baby to the family “without any sign of life.”
“We are shaken and concerned at this rare incident. We have initiated a detailed inquiry, pending which, the concerned doctor has been asked to proceed on leave immediately. We are in constant touch with the parents and are providing all the support needed,” the statement said.

Then, on Sunday evening, the two doctors involved were fired, though Max Healthcare noted that this was not an admission of guilt.
“We wish to clarify that this action should not presuppose finding of any lapse by the expert group and should not be construed in any way to be anything other than an expression of our continued commitment to providing quality healthcare,” a statement read.
An investigation is expected to come to a close on Monday.
