A Missouri man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted a 2-year-old girl before being stopped by a hero mother on Friday.
The mother of a two-year-old girl allegedly saw William L. Bates Jr. “eyeballing” her children, according to her statement to police. Bates then allegedly walked up behind the girl, grabbed her by the hips, and pulled her diaper down. He then took off his shirt and lowered his pants and began to thrust against the little girl.
The girl’s mother rushed over and began to pummel Bates. He eventually got away, but the mother rushed to a nearby homeless shelter and called police.

Police arrested Bates near the playground and found marijuana on him as well as a vial of unidentified white liquid that reportedly had a chemical odor. Bates claimed that he had gotten a cigarette from someone at the park and did not remember anything after that until he woke up in a fenced area and was taken into custody.
Bates has been charged with first-degree attempted sodomy, and attempted statutory sodomy with a person less than 12 years old. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday and is currently being held on $150,000 cash bond.
