Tougaloo College and Jackson State University have been named as top 20 Historically Black College and Universities in U.S. News and World Report’s 2022 Best Colleges rankings.
These historically Black colleges and universities were compared only with one another for these rankings. To be on the list, a school must be currently designated by the U.S. Department of Education as an HBCU. To qualify for the U.S. News rankings, an HBCU also must be an undergraduate baccalaureate-granting institution that enrolls primarily first-year, first-time students and must be a school that is part of the 2022 Best Colleges rankings.
Of 78 HBCUs ranked, Tougaloo College was ranked highest in Mississippi at 15th. Jackson State University tied for 18th place with Clark Atlanta University.
“These rankings serve as a frame of reference to what we offer not only as an HBCU but as an institution of higher learning. At Jackson State University, we provide students with an all-encompassing quality education that spans beyond academics,” Thomas K. Hudson, president of JSU, said in a news release. “Our students receive real-world experiences in a holistic and nurturing environment that ensure their successful matriculation at JSU and in life. Being named a top 20 HBCU is a reflection of this.”
