Widespread reports of racist text messages sent to Black Americans are spreading across social media. The texts, some of which were labeled as coming from “A TRUMP SUPPORTER,” tell the recipients that they’ve been selected to be enslaved and assigned to pick cotton on a plantation.
The messages have been reported in multiple states, according to social media posts where screenshots are going viral. While many individuals and groups have received them, many seem to be targeting Black college and university students. Students have reported them in Clemson University, Ohio State. the University of Alabama and other Alabama schools, among others.
The messages vary in details but follow the same basic script. Even more disturbingly, some include the first name of the recipients.
The texts seem to be targeting college students.
“Some students have received these hateful text messages,” said Ohio State University spokesman Ben Johnson. “We have reported the messages to the Office of Institutional Equity and are offering support services. We are aware that this is happening nationally.”
“This is racism at its highest,” said Columbus NAACP President Nana Watson. “I believe it is a hate crime as I see it.”
There were no immediate reports of the messages having been received by text in Florida.
