Rochester, N.Y. — Black Americans are twice as likely as white Americans to have Alzheimer's, and are less likely to receive a diagnosis.
Monroe County's rate of Alzheimer's for residents age 65 or older is 11.7%, tied for eighth-highest in New York state.
The Rochester & Finger Lakes Region Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association held its annual Dr. Lemuel & Gloria Rogers African American Health Symposium Thursday at the Rochester Museum & Science Center.
This year's event highlighted support for caregivers.
"The caregiver role is a stressful role," said Arlene Wilson, the chapter's senior director of programs. "It's an ever-changing role, and it's an important role, so we want to make sure, within the community, people have these resources — and within the African American community in particular."
